This is the final episode of "The Little Death."  A special thank you goes out to Alice, Black and White. I might never have finished this story had she not told me how much she wanted to hear the rest of it.  Alice, I hope it was worth the wait.

Telepaths, murder and conspiracy... Agent Robin Helki, an esper working for the Fifth Precinct, is on the run after stumbling into a government conspiracy.  A famous telepath declared dead 30 years ago was recently found dead in a sleazy sex-tel and after declaring the woman a murder victim, Robin must escape or suffer an even worse fate.  But it may be too late for her.  Telepaths aren’t meant to live long, and Robin is breaking down both physically and mentally.  Captured by OverWatch, her only choice left is to lead them to the android Luciente, in hopes that she can save herself and her partner, Slade.

Jones eventually runs out of barbs and insults to torment us with.  Though he's doing his best to overcome it, the man is in a great deal of pain.  I take a certain amount of satisfaction in that.  That was my doing.  I struck a blow against him.  I fought back and hurt him.  I wish I had done it much sooner in my life.  I wish I hadn't wasted years believing I was weak and helpless, with no future but what OverWatch mandated for me.  I never had a future, I always knew that, but that was no reason to not fight back.  If I had, maybe things would have turned out differently for Slade.  Maybe I would have died before he met me.  Maybe he'd still be sitting in his office, puzzling over the details of some case, working with some other esper to solve it, instead of throwing away his life to save me.

I'm not surprised when the squad cars show up.  We're still deep inside the Brink, headed for a rendezvous with Joseph Vallard.  But OverWatch had to be searching for us.  There's no place inside the city we could run to before they found us.

“Son of a bitch,” Slade mutters as the howl of sirens rises up around us.  He jerks the steering wheel left, then right, seeking an escape.  The car careens then screeches to a halt and I hear the crunch of metal on metal as I'm flung from the seat.  I land hard on the floor, arms and legs in a useless tangle.

“Shit!” Slade shouts.

From where I lie on the floor, I can see his hands on the steering wheel.  The knuckles are bone white.  Flashing red lights bleed through the car windows.  We're surrounded.  I spare a glance at Stan, still sitting in the back seat.  He nods in confirmation.

“Time's up, Helki.  They caught you.  Whatever you do, don't let them retire you.  Fight until you kill someone or you die.”

Stan sits with me in the back of the car as Slade drives through the Brink.

“You don't look so good,” Stan mutters.

“Neither... do you,” I wheeze.

“Yeah, well, when you die, I die.  Again.”

He sighs and stares out the window.  “You've had a shit life, you know that Helki?  I never understood it until I had to live inside your head, but it's been complete crap.  You never went anywhere, never did anything but what OverWatch told you to do.  From cradle to grave, you've been nothing but their bitch.”

“And you... weren't?” I ask...

The old man stiffens as the hatred spreads from his eyes to the rest of his face.  The emotion leeches away all hint of his humanity, transforming the soft sagging skin of his aging face to jagged stone.  It's quite a sight.  Not even Stanison on his worst days gave me a look so deadly cold.  But then I suspect Joe Foster has more reasons to hate me than Stan ever did, reasons that go beyond Michael Slade.

“You know... an awful lot... about espers,” I say to him.  “Why is that...”

“Go to hell.”

“You mentioned... the second generation...  How do you know about them?”

He looks away.  “I'm not talking to some goddam freak of nature.”

“But there's nothing natural... about me... is there?  Ming na Tan... and Rodin Tamesin... they made me... in a lab... made all us espers...”

The room begins to spin.  Smoke from the fire curls overhead in dark, dizzying whorls, ready to descend upon me and snuff me out.

“You should never have been created,” I hear Joe hiss.  “You and your kind were a mistake, just like the generation before you.”  His face appears in the center of the swirling smoke like the visage of an angry god.  “Oh, you're not quite the monstrosities your predecessors were,” he continues.  “At least you look human.  But your minds are just as flawed and dangerous.  How long do you think it will be before you strike out against Michael and turn his skull inside out?”

“Stop...” I murmur.  I'm getting up.  I can do this.  I just have to push myself off the ground.  “Stop...”  Another push.  I've got one foot under me.  I just need to stand now.
“Stop!”

I'm upright, on my feet.  Luciente pauses in mid-rape to stare at me.

“My, you are full of surprises.  You're practically dead, and yet here you are, challenging me.  You really think you can take me, little girl?”

“Yeah,” I say, swaying on my feet.  Oh, this is going to have to be quick.  “Yeah, I can take you.”

It's getting darker out, or maybe that's just me.  Maybe my eyesight is failing along with my arms and legs.  Doesn't matter.  I can see stuff now with my mind that I could never see with the naked eye.  The spots of color I saw in Ming's apartment are back.  The alleys become a patchwork of emotions and memories.  Some of them come to life as we pass, like ghosts rising up to re-enact the events that created them.  I see robberies and murders that occurred years ago; drug deals, gang rapes and suicides.  The pavement is saturated with fear and hatred and violence.  I can't shut any of it out.

Slade walks for a long time. I keep fading in and out of consciousness, slipping back and forth between the real world and the one inside my head.  At times, I'm safe and secure in Slade's arms.  But when my eyes close, Luciente is always there waiting for me.

I wake up in the back seat of Slade's car.  My legs are on fire.  Pain licks up my thighs and burns into my groin.  I've become a living torch.  I better be careful what I touch.  One wrong move and I may set the whole world on fire.

I roll over.  Even doing that hurts.  Not good.  I'm not going to be able to walk when Slade finally stops the car.  In fact, I may never be able to walk again.

Slade grunts at me from the front seat.  “You awake again?”

“Yeah. Not feeling so good though.  I think I may be reaching the end.”

“No.”  He says the word with such a flat finality, as though he could halt reality if he wanted to.  “No. You're not at the end.  Not yet.  We'll get through this.  You're going to be fine.  You just hang in there, okay?  Don't quit on me now.”

Mrs. Tan's body sways gently in the sling chair.  Stan waits beside her, ready to show me the cause of death.  From the odor of burnt flesh and the scorch marks on the wall behind her, I can already guess how she went; one shot to the head with a zap gun.  That's why I'm so surprised when Stan turns the sling chair toward me and the woman sits up, head still intact.

“Hello Robin,” she says.  “It's good you finally made it here.”

“What?”

I stumble back, suddenly sick to my stomach.  This woman is supposed to be dead.  I know this.  She's supposed to be a headless corpse, her neck ending in a charred stump.  I know this.  I know this!  So why is she sitting there, looking at me, waiting for me to speak?

“How... you can't...” I stutter.

Stan shakes his head. “Jesus. Stupid esper freak.  I told you she wouldn't get it.  She's already too far gone.”

Mrs. Tan holds up a hand.  “Wait.  Let me talk to her.  She'll understand.”

"I killed him!  I swear I killed him!"

This is the way a case is supposed to end.

"I killed him!" the old woman on the vid-screen shrieks again.  "I killed him!"

Her sallow face twists into a mask of horror as she howls the words over and over again.  Her eyes roll back in her head.  She tears hanks of iron grey hair from her scalp and gouges her wrinkled cheeks until blood mingles with the tears running down her face.

“Oh good god,” I murmur, watching her confession unfold on the vid screen.  I shudder.  This is the way a case is supposed to end, I tell myself again.  Not how it's supposed to begin.

I do not appear where I expect to appear.  Or rather, I do, but it's still wrong somehow. I'm standing in the lot outside Ming's lab, where I last saw Stan.  Only Stan isn't here and the warehouse is in flames.  Hurston Jones lies nearby in a tangled heap on the cracked asphalt.  He's still alive, I'm certain of it, but that doesn't stop the roaches from eating away at him.  Thousands of them crawl out of the conflagration to swarm over Jones' body.  Each tiny menace takes a bite out of him and then scurries off with a bloody chunk in its mandibles.  Slowly but surely, they strip away his flesh.  He moans as the insects go about their gruesome work, and I wonder if the real Hurston Jones can feel what's happening to him in my mind.  Part of me would very much like to believe he can.
