Fri, 25 September 2009 When I graduated from college, my dad, the former all-star college athlete turned grouchy arm-chair quarterback, threw me out of the house as hard and as fast as he could. “You got an education!” he grunted as he kicked me out the front door and through the goal posts of life. “You got five thousand in the bank. Now go out and get a job!” So with bags packed by Mom, I headed out into the real world and did reasonably well for someone with a liberal arts degree. I found a job in advertising at small local newspaper, where I busted my ass for ten years, earning 5-10% commission on every column inch of ad space I sold. I made enough to buy a new car, pay rent on a tiny single bedroom apartment, and take myself out to eat a couple times a month. I wasn’t rich, but I was making ends meet and I was out on my own, out from under Dad’s tyrannical thumb. Life was good. Then the economy tanked and my American dream went straight down the toilet... Fri, 18 September 2009 “Hey Randall! Why don’t you strap your saddle on ol’ Pony Boy there? He looks like he could use a good riding.” Blaine and Philip doubled over with laughter, their guffaws oddly muffled by the unremitting drone of cicadas. The cloying smell of honeysuckle hung thick in the air, but beneath it laid the tang of dying leaves and the earthy scent of manure. It was mid October and Indian summer still held sway at Polk’s stables. Migrating college students with a taste for horses had long since packed up their bags and headed back to Yale or Harvard or whatever Ivy League it was their daddies paid for. Only Blaine, Philip, and I remained behind. And Pony Boy, of course, whose real name was Tyrell... Fri, 11 September 2009 While Joe fumbled with his scattered notes, he spoke. “For those of you who weren’t at last month’s meeting, we took a vote and uh, decided that Deer Park would be a better venue this year than Falls Creek Park. It’s about uh, fifteen miles closer and has better bathroom facilities...” And on he droned, going into detail about the many advantages of Deer Park. I was dozing. To keep myself awake I focused on the action taking place on the floor by Joe’s feet. Two young men dressed in nothing but ripped jeans knelt in the middle of my Persian carpet kissing each other. They were in their early twenties, clean cut and very attractive. Their names were Jordan and David. I’d discovered them the night before on a gay porn site... Fri, 4 September 2009 The first time we met, Jimmy called me a ‘wee lassie.’ I swear it’s the only time in my life anybody ever called me ‘wee’, but that’s what Jimmy kept calling me even after I stood up and towered over him by about seven inches. We were at the Velvet Dark, a local hot spot for the fetish community. I’d been going there every Saturday night for over six years, but that evening was Jimmy’s first time. He showed up on leather night wearing a pair of faded jeans and his favorite St. Andrew’s rugby shirt. I think the only leather he owned back then was his belt...
